In 2021, Vietnam exports 13.6 million tons of wood chips, of which 98% of exports are to three markets: China (8.8 million tons ~ 65%), Japan (4.09 million tons ~ 30 %) and Korea (458.62 thousand tons ~ 3.4%). The rest is exported to markets such as Laos, Indonesia, and Taiwan.

In Cai Lan area, the largest woodchip export port in the North are, the export volume of wood chips from both ports (Quang Ninh and CICT) in 2021 reached 5.2 million tons, of which Quang Ninh Port reached 3.4 million tons, accounting for 65.4% of the whole region, CICT reached 1.8 million tons, accounting for 34.6%. All of these products are mainly exported to China, Japan and South Korea. The export price of woodchips according to FOB prices tends to increase slightly in 2021 and increase sharply in 2022. The average price of woodchips exported to the Chinese market increased from 117 USD/ton in January 2021 to 120 USD/ton in December 2021 and the price in October 2022 is at 180 USD/ton. Similar in the Japanese market, the average price was at 121USD/ton in January 2021 to 126USD/ton in December 2021 and the price in October 2022 increased to 185USD/ton. The export price to Korea increased from 118 USD/ton in January 2021 to 120 USD/ton in December 2021 and is currently at 182 USD/ton.
